Good Charlotte’s Joel and Benji Madden made a surprise appearance during Hilary Duff’s Madison Square Garden concert, joining her to perform the band’s 2002 song ‘The Anthem’. The appearance drew attention because it occurred only hours after their company, Veeps, reportedly made extensive redundancies at several long-running US music publications, raising concerns about the future of those outlets and music journalism jobs.
Duff introduced the brothers while wearing a Good Charlotte shirt; she and Joel Madden previously dated between 2004 and 2006 and have remained friendly. Veeps, now part of Live Nation, reportedly owns BrooklynVegan, Alternative Press, Revolver and Goldmine, where nearly all staff were said to have been affected; the titles were founded between the 1970s and 2004. Veeps and Live Nation had not commented publicly at the time of publication.
