Bystander may have fatally shot suspect after Oregon school attack

Daily Mail ·

Four people, including three children and one adult, were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. Police said the 16-year-old suspected gunman was fatally shot shortly after officers arrived; reports said a bystander may have shot him, though authorities had not confirmed who did.

Police began responding at about 1pm, two minutes after shots were reported, and were evacuating pupils and staff room by room. Two people were taken to hospital, with their conditions unclear. The school has about 400 to 450 pupils and more than 40 staff, and federal agents were helping with the investigation.

Bend is a city in central Oregon, in the north-western United States. Silver Rail Elementary is a primary school serving children and staff from the local area.

In the United States, police and federal agents may investigate a school shooting together, gathering evidence and establishing what happened. Identifying who fired a weapon, and when, can be important to understanding deaths and injuries and whether anyone else may be responsible.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

A bystander who believes people face an immediate threat may have a strong moral case for using necessary force when waiting for police could cost lives. In a fast-moving attack, intervention might stop further harm, especially if officers have not yet reached those at risk.

The case against

Even in a crisis, using potentially lethal force carries grave risks: a bystander may mistake who the attacker is, endanger others, or complicate police response. The strongest case for restraint is that trained officers should handle the threat where possible, while bystanders focus on sheltering or helping people escape.
