Google is accelerating deployment of its age-assurance system for Android app developers in response to worldwide regulatory demands for stronger protections of young users online. Beginning with Australia and Canada in August, the Play Signal API will reach all markets by December 2026, building on technology already operational in Brazil. The announcement mirrors Apple's own February 2026 launch of similar age-verification capabilities as jurisdictions introduce stricter requirements.

The system operates by letting parents input their child's age range once within Google's Family Link parental dashboard, then sharing that signal with any developer who integrates it—eliminating the need to repeat the process per app. Personal information like birth dates remains private; adults can also opt to share their own age for customized content. The feature sits alongside existing Google Play safeguards including download approval and content filters, giving developers context for safer design whilst preserving parental oversight.
