Google fixes Photos bug hiding edited images from Android’s app picker

Engadget ·

Google has fixed a Google Photos bug that stopped edited images from appearing in Android’s image picker in other apps. The issue made it harder for users to share edited photos through messaging and social media apps.

The problem was reported over the summer, and saving an edited image as a separate copy worked around it. Users who wanted to keep only the edited version could not use that workaround without retaining the original. The fix was reported by APK Mirror founder Artem Russakovskii and 9to5Google; Google had also recently fixed a separate Photos issue that made several controls unresponsive after editing.

In short

  • Edited Google Photos images now appear in other apps.
  • Saving a copy had been a workaround.
  • Google recently fixed another Photos bug affecting controls.

Explained simply

Google Photos is Google’s service for storing and editing pictures, while Android is Google’s mobile operating system. Apps such as messaging and social media services use Android’s image picker to let people choose photos to share.

A photo edited in Google Photos could be missing from that picker, making it harder to share the edited version in another app. Saving it as a separate copy worked around the problem, but meant keeping both the original and the edit.
