Google is phasing out its original Google Assistant on Android devices, directing all voice-activated requests through its newer Gemini AI system beginning in September. While Gemini offers more advanced capabilities such as conversational abilities and complex reasoning, it operates more slowly and proves less dependable for routine tasks, occasionally misinterpreting commands or requiring manual intervention.

Users have expressed frustration over the forced migration, citing specific failures where Gemini misunderstood basic requests or demanded phone unlocks for tasks the older Assistant handled seamlessly. The company previously delayed this transition when Gemini proved insufficient, allowing a fallback system, but will eliminate that option after the deadline. The change applies only to Android devices and accessories, whilst Google Home and other smart devices will retain Assistant access for the time being.
