Google unveils enterprise Gemini agent spanning workplace apps and devices
Google has launched a "universal" Gemini AI agent for enterprise customers that works across multiple apps and devices from a single interface. The tool, available in the Gemini Enterprise app and announced at the Gemini at Work event, can function across Google Workspace applications like Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Calendar, as well as third-party services such as Slack and Microsoft 365. This represents Google's broader ambition to create a single AI assistant capable of handling various work tasks across the entire digital workplace.
The Gemini agent runs in the cloud, maintaining context across connected devices including mobile, desktop, and web interfaces. It can delegate work to job-specific sub-agents and function as a "coworker agent" with its own corporate email address, automatically selecting the best AI model for each task. Currently limited to enterprise customers in private preview, the agent follows Google's May launch of the consumer-facing Gemini Spark agent, which offers similar cross-platform functionality through a separate interface.

New here? Start with this
Most businesses today use multiple different software tools to get work done—email, document storage, messaging apps, spreadsheets and more. This means workers constantly switch between applications, losing time and context as they jump from one to another. Google's new Gemini agent aims to solve this by bringing together these different tools under a single AI assistant.
Gemini is an artificial intelligence system that can understand and act on instructions across multiple applications at once. For enterprise customers, it works with Google's own workplace apps like Gmail and Google Docs, but also with popular competitors such as Slack and Microsoft 365. Rather than users having to navigate each app individually, they can give instructions to Gemini and it coordinates the work across all these different platforms.
This represents a shift in how companies might organise their digital workplaces. Instead of having many separate tools, businesses could use one AI assistant as a sort of digital coworker that understands their various systems and can move between them seamlessly. Google has positioned this as part of its broader push to build AI assistants that become integrated into everyday work.
