Google is developing a way to install Chrome updates without requiring a full browser restart, aiming to reduce disruption while keeping users protected. The move matters because faster, more frequent updates can narrow the window in which attackers exploit publicly disclosed flaws before users have installed the relevant fixes.

Google says AI-assisted security tools are helping it find and resolve more defects: Chrome versions 149 and 150 included 1,072 fixes, more than the previous 23 major releases combined. Chrome will move to a fortnightly release schedule from September, with security updates in between and potentially two security updates per week; meanwhile, Chrome 150 on macOS can already restart automatically when all browser windows are closed but the app remains running.
