Google launches Pixel Watch 5 with expanded health tracking
Developed over time first seen 2 months ago
Google has unveiled the Pixel Watch 5, expanding its Gemini assistant and adding more proactive health-monitoring features. The launch matters because it positions the smartwatch as both an everyday AI assistant and a device for longer-term health insights, including possible early indicators of cardiovascular and metabolic risks.
The watch can identify blood-pressure patterns and changes associated with insulin resistance, with monthly trend summaries, while persistent low blood-oxygen levels may trigger emergency-service contact in selected European countries. Google also claims 15% more accurate sleep-stage tracking, GPS route mapping twice as accurate as previous models, 20% faster overall performance and up to 40 hours of battery life; prices start at $399 for 41mm and $429 for 44mm, with availability from 20 August.

Google’s Pixel Watch is a smartwatch made by the technology company Google, designed to work closely with Android phones. It combines functions such as notifications, calls, fitness tracking and health measurements in a device worn on the wrist.
Gemini is Google’s artificial intelligence assistant, which can answer questions, help with tasks and use information from apps and messages when permitted. Bringing it to a watch reflects a wider push by technology firms to make AI tools available through more personal devices, including without a phone connection for some commands.
Smartwatches increasingly collect data on heart rate, sleep, activity and breathing to flag possible changes over time. Such features can support users and healthcare conversations, but they do not replace medical tests or a diagnosis from a clinician.
