Google is rolling out a new feature that lets Gemini users on Mac talk to the AI assistant from any window simply by long-pressing the "fn" key. The update makes the chatbot far more accessible on macOS, allowing users to dictate notes, issue voice commands, or ask Gemini to act on whatever is currently open on their screen, without needing to switch to a dedicated app window first.

The feature can transcribe spoken words at the cursor, automatically cleaning up filler words like "ums" and "ahs" for a polished result. Users who enable Gemini's screen-aware reasoning can also highlight content, such as text in a PDF, and ask the assistant to summarise it, or use notes to draft an email via the Spark agentic AI tool added in June. It follows the native Gemini app's April 2026 launch on macOS, and currently supports English only, with more languages promised later this year.
