Republicans have reacted with anger after New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, revealed that a software error at the state's Motor Vehicle Commission had mistakenly registered 6,600 non-citizens to vote. The disclosure has fuelled Republican claims about lax voter roll oversight in Democratic-run states and reignited debate over voter identity verification, with critics arguing the true scale of the problem could be far larger than initially acknowledged.

Sherrill confirmed that as many as 400 non-citizens are believed to have actually cast ballots in New Jersey elections during the tenure of her predecessor, Phil Murphy. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin went further, warning that up to 35,000 non-citizens could still be registered on the state's voter rolls. The Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the matter, while a technology contractor has reportedly pushed back on the state's account, attributing responsibility for the registration errors elsewhere.
