Former Tennessee Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher defeated Republican US Representative Andy Ogles in the primary for Tennessee’s reshaped 5th Congressional District. The result removes an incumbent backed by President Donald Trump and is notable as an uncommon primary defeat for a Trump-endorsed candidate.

The contest was held after Republican state lawmakers redrew the district in May, substantially changing its electorate and adding more rural, agricultural areas. Outside groups spent heavily in the race, while Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson supported Ogles; Hatcher will now become the Republican nominee for the general election.
