Graham Norton said launching new chat shows is increasingly difficult because stars and their representatives now favour podcasts and YouTube for promotion. Speaking at the RTS London Convention, he questioned whether chat shows remain an important part of promotional tours and joked that his programme could become “the last chat show on Planet Earth”.

Norton said guests sometimes decline requests that seem modest on his show, yet take part in more outlandish online formats. He also said he had abandoned hopes of sharing the presenting schedule with Claudia Winkleman: her BBC chat show was planned to air while his was off-air, but ended after one season when she decided to step back, saying she had been too nervous to enjoy it. Norton said he thought Winkleman was good at hosting and accepted her decision.
