Greater Manchester mayoral by-election: Full list of candidates

The Independent · 3 hours ago

Greater Manchester is holding a mayoral by-election to replace Andy Burnham after he became MP for Makerfield in June. More than two million people can vote across the region’s 10 local authorities, making it the largest by-election electorate in UK history and the first by-election for an English combined-authority mayor.

Seven candidates are standing: Sian Astley (Reform), Geraldine Coggins (Green), Bev Craig (Labour), Phil Eckersley (Conservative), Marcus Farmer (Independent), Richard Kilpatrick (Liberal Democrats) and Marlon West (Restore Britain). The vote uses the supplementary vote system, allowing first and second preferences, unlike the first-past-the-post system used in 2024; polls close at 10pm on Thursday and a result is expected on Friday afternoon.

  • Over two million voters can choose Greater Manchester’s next mayor.
  • Seven candidates seek to replace former mayor Andy Burnham.
  • The by-election returns to supplementary voting.
