Greece Passes Crypto Tax Law With 10% Gains Levy, 15% on Staking and DeFi
Greece’s parliament has passed a law taxing cryptocurrency gains at 10% and returns from staking, lending and decentralised finance at 15%. The rules, due to take effect on 1 January 2027, establish a tax framework for crypto income as part of a wider government finance package.
Individual investors with annual net gains of €500 or less are exempt; above that threshold, the 10% rate applies to the entire gain. Crypto losses over €500 can be carried forward for five years, and investors have 12 months to declare eligible previously unreported income without late-filing penalties or interest. A parliamentary review warned that the law may not clearly exempt trades between cryptocurrencies, while officials are preparing implementation guidance; the government has not estimated the tax revenue.
In short
- Greece approved a 10% tax on crypto gains from 2027.
- Staking, lending and DeFi returns will be taxed at 15%.
- Crypto-to-crypto trades may need clearer rules.
