Green behind party’s ‘Zionism is racism’ motion is ‘Vegan Doctor’ being probed by medical regulator over support for ‘death to IDF’ chants
Rebecca Jones, a Green Party councillor and GP known online as “The Vegan Doctor”, is among 745 supporters of a motion defining Zionism as racism. The motion passed at the party’s annual conference and became policy, prompting scrutiny of the signatories and renewing debate over the party’s position on Israel and Palestine.
Jones is under a General Medical Council fitness to practise investigation, opened in June, over social media posts including “Burn Zionism to the ground” and praise for a reading attributed to former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. She says the investigation is linked to her speaking out about Palestine and argues that anti-Zionist views are protected beliefs. Other supporters named include two people convicted over a plot to damage an Israeli drone factory, and Lewisham Council deputy leader Hau-Yu Tam, who has previously faced controversy over comments and posts about Zionism and Hamas.
