Abbott warns Texas Senate loss could hurt Republican 2028 hopes

Daily Mail ·

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has warned that losing the state’s Senate race could damage Republican hopes of winning the 2028 presidential election. Democrat James Talarico is running close to, and in one recent poll ahead of, Trump-backed Republican Ken Paxton, making the contest a concern for the state’s Republican leadership.

A Texas Public Opinion Research poll put Talarico on 51 per cent and Paxton on 47 per cent. Paxton’s campaign has faced scrutiny over his personal life and associations, while Abbott is also seeking re-election and leads Democrat Gina Hinojosa by three points in the same poll. Abbott urged Republicans to vote, arguing that turnout will determine the outcome.

In short

  • Abbott says a Texas loss could hurt Republican prospects in 2028.
  • Talarico leads Paxton 51 per cent to 47 per cent in one poll.
  • Abbott is also campaigning against Democrat Gina Hinojosa.
