BBC Radio 1 breakfast presenter Greg James has announced the death of his beloved pet dog Barney, a chocolate labrador that had become familiar to his audience through regular on-air mentions and online posts. The dog was euthanised at James's home, and the presenter shared his grief publicly through Instagram, describing himself as emotionally devastated and unable to stop crying over the loss.

James had adopted Barney from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2019, and the dog had received veterinary care from Professor Noel Fitzpatrick of The Supervet for arthritic joints. Following the announcement, James requested privacy for himself and his wife, author Bella Mackie, whilst Radio 1 listeners responded with messages of sympathy and support, and colleague Charlie Hedges covered his breakfast show duties.
