Greggs proposes four factory closures, putting 740 jobs at risk
Greggs plans to close four manufacturing sites over the next two and a half years, putting 740 jobs at risk. The bakery chain says the changes are intended to improve efficiency and strengthen its manufacturing network as it adapts to changing customer expectations.
The affected sites are Enfield, North Lakes, Pettigrews and Seaham; Enfield’s distribution operations will continue unchanged. Greggs also plans to stop making tinned bread at Gosforth and reduce the range produced at Clydesmill and Manchester, where manufacturing will continue. The proposals follow a review of its network and would leave production across six sites; its shops are not affected. Greggs says it has 33,000 employees and has grown from 2,181 shops in 2021 to 2,796 this year.
