Grian Chatten says Fontaines D.C. had no idea AI was used in ‘Marianne’ video: “I don’t condone it”

NME ·

Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten says the band did not know artificial intelligence had been used in the video for ‘Marianne’ until it came to light afterwards. He described the discovery as a shock and said the band do not condone the use of AI in their videos.

Chatten said someone on the visual effects team had apparently used AI in the production workflow, despite more than 100 people working on the video; he said the label and management were also not informed. The band have since added contract terms barring AI from future music videos. Chatten criticised AI’s effects on creative work and society, while Fontaines D.C. have released their fifth album, ‘Dopamine Chamber’, and are preparing for major UK and Ireland shows.

In short

  • Fontaines D.C. were unaware AI was used in the ‘Marianne’ video.
  • Grian Chatten said the band do not condone its use.
  • Future video contracts will prohibit AI.
