Grimes making film debut in entirely AI-generated ‘Gods Don’t Give Gifts’
Grimes is making her film debut in *Gods Don’t Give Gifts*, a science-fiction anthology presented as the first fully AI-generated film to receive a theatrical release. Her participation highlights the project’s approach to animation, which combines AI-generated visuals with a performer’s voice and likeness.
The film comprises four short stories, created by AI studio Fable and YouTuber Zack London, known as Gossip Goblin, and is due in cinemas on 4 December. Grimes plays Zayinth Alda, a “disenfranchised” aristocrat on a fictional world where bodies are disposable and consciousness is commoditised. She has previously released AI music tools and is due to release the AI-themed album *Psy Opera* in January 2027, which she says was not made using generative AI.
In short

Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
AI-assisted filmmaking could give independent creators access to visual techniques and production scale that would otherwise be costly, while enabling distinctive forms of animation and storytelling. Grimes’s involvement also shows how performers can choose to lend their voice and likeness to new creative workflows, potentially opening opportunities for experimentation and collaboration.
The case against
A film built around generated visuals and a performer’s likeness raises questions about consent, compensation and how creative credit is shared among artists and AI systems. Critics may also worry that presenting AI production as a substitute for human-made work could weaken employment and bargaining power for animators and other film workers, especially if the tools rely on creative material or labour without fair terms.
