GTA 6 completely “re-engineered” Rockstar’s weather systems to “achieve a sense of scale we haven’t felt before,” adding hurricanes, rainbows and heavy rain

Rockstar Games has substantially redesigned GTA 6's weather systems to create a more immersive and expansive open world. The VP of art for lighting and rendering revealed that the game now features dynamic hurricanes, rainbows, and improved cloud systems that make the environment feel significantly more realistic and large-scale than previous iterations.

The weather system is now "localized and persistent," meaning players can witness rain falling in distant areas whilst remaining dry themselves, with aftereffects such as wet pavements and rainbows lingering long after storms pass. The game features dynamic cloudscapes ranging from Miami's clear winter skies to dramatic summer thunderstorms with lightning, accompanied by heavy winds and water effects like roof runoff and gushing lampposts. Additionally, Rockstar confirmed the game will contain over 170 animal species including 60 birds and 30+ land mammals, with scuba-diving returning and discoverable and Legendary animals akin to Red Dead Redemption 2. GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on 19 November.
