GTA 6 could reportedly be locked to 30 FPS, even on PS5 Pro
Developed over time first seen 2 months ago
Reports based on an early Rockstar North gameplay viewing suggest Grand Theft Auto 6 may launch capped at 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5, including the PS5 Pro. Rockstar has not confirmed this target, but the prospect matters because many players expect the more powerful Pro console to provide a 60fps performance option.
Brazilian creator DavyJones said he saw the game running at 30fps and asked Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson about performance. Nelson did not provide a technical commitment, saying the team would need to clarify, but called 30fps suitable for the scale of activity on screen; the approach would match GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, which initially ran at 30fps on consoles before later receiving 60fps support on newer platforms. GTA 6 is due for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Rockstar's approach prioritises consistent performance and visual ambition over raw framerate, allowing the game's unprecedented scale—denser NPC populations, complex destruction physics, detailed environments—to flourish without compromise. The studio's track record with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 demonstrates that 30fps on consoles can deliver critical and commercial success, with 60fps arriving later on more powerful hardware.
The case against
Players investing in PS5 Pro hardware reasonably expected the console's extra power to unlock a 60fps option at launch, particularly for a flagship title. The gaming industry has shown that 60fps remains achievable for major releases on base PS5, making a hard ceiling at 30fps feel unnecessarily conservative and a failure to justify the premium hardware purchase, especially given uncertainty about whether this reflects genuine technical necessity or design philosophy alone.
Explained simply
Grand Theft Auto is a long-running series of open-world crime games made by Rockstar Games. Players explore large fictional cities, follow a story and take part in activities that can place heavy demands on a console’s hardware.
Frames per second, usually shortened to FPS, describes how many images a game displays each second. A higher figure such as 60fps can make movement appear smoother, while 30fps has been common in visually detailed console games because it allows more processing power for graphics and busy scenes.
PlayStation 5 Pro is a more powerful version of Sony’s PlayStation 5, intended to improve aspects such as image quality and performance in supported games. Whether a game offers different performance options is decided by its developer, and Rockstar has not yet set out the final technical features for Grand Theft Auto 6.
