Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will include a relationship system for its two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, allowing players to strengthen their romance by spending time together in the open world. It matters because their bond is expected to shape aspects of the story, adding an optional emotional layer to a series better known for criminal activity and satire.

Players can build the relationship through leisure activities such as pool, mini golf, kayaking, jet skiing and relaxing at their shared safe house, as well as through robberies and other crimes. Maintaining the romance is not compulsory: Jason and Lucia will remain partners in crime for most of the game regardless, with no direct gameplay advantage for being a perfect couple, but the strength of their relationship will affect how their story unfolds.
