GTA 6 Region Locks Raise More Questions About PSN’s Flaky Infrastructure

Push Square · 5 hours ago

The region-locking system tied to PSN accounts is once again under scrutiny, this time because physical copies of GTA 6 include a code that can only be redeemed on a PlayStation Network account registered in one of a limited set of supported countries. This has long been a known quirk of PSN, with players routinely creating accounts under other regions to work around it, but the issue is becoming more pressing now that a PSN login is increasingly required to play Sony-published games, including on PC, leaving buyers outside the supported list unable to redeem their codes without importing a copy and setting up a foreign account.

Push Square's editor notes the problem has already affected other titles, such as Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, and lists the specific regions where GTA 6 codes can be redeemed, including the UK, US, Canada, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, various Latin American and EMEA countries, and others; notably, Japanese codes expire after 170 days. The article argues that while affected players are generally aware of workarounds, the situation highlights ongoing weaknesses in PSN's infrastructure, and suggests Sony should address these problems properly if it intends to push towards an all-digital future.

  • GTA 6's boxed PSN codes are region-locked to specific supported countries.
  • Players outside those regions must import copies and use foreign PSN accounts.
  • Highlights broader, long-standing flaws in PSN's regional account system.
