Netflix has confirmed that its "Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look" preview was the most-streamed title on the entire platform last week, ranking number one in 58 countries and reaching the top 10 in 87 of the 93 territories Netflix tracks. The 27-minute gameplay reveal, released under a deal between Netflix and publisher Take-Two Interactive, was the first event of its kind on the platform and briefly caused an outage due to demand, highlighting the scale of anticipation for the game ahead of its November launch.

Netflix says the clip has drawn 31.1 million views, enough to outperform new releases such as The Whisper Man and to edge past Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, which had 29.1 million views in its first three days last year. The footage has separately gained over 17 million views on YouTube in under four days. GTA 6 has reportedly amassed around five million pre-orders across PS5 and Xbox, is squeezing PS5 Pro stock at US retailers, and is due to launch on 19 November.

GTA 6, the next instalment in Rockstar Games' long-running crime series, is one of the most anticipated video games ever made, and it is due to be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox on 19 November. Ahead of launch, its publisher, Take-Two Interactive, struck a deal with Netflix to host an official "Extended Look" preview clip showing gameplay footage, which was made available to Netflix subscribers alongside the platform's usual film and TV content.

Netflix ranks its most-watched content each week much as it does for its films and series, and the GTA 6 clip has been performing well enough on those charts to be treated as a genuine rival to Netflix's own big titles, despite being a promotional video rather than a movie or show. The comparison matters because it puts a video game trailer in direct competition with original Netflix productions for viewing figures, which is unusual.

The wider context is that GTA games have historically sold in the hundreds of millions of copies, making any signs of demand for a new entry closely watched by the games industry, retailers and investors alike, since it can affect everything from console sales to hardware availability in the run-up to release.
