GTA 6’s Relationship Mechanic Is ‘Cheating’ on Your Real-Life Partner and Break Up Worthy, According to Angry Spouses
Grand Theft Auto 6's in-depth relationship system between protagonists Jason and Lucia has sparked backlash from some players' real-life partners, who argue that nurturing the in-game romance amounts to virtual cheating. The controversy erupted on social media, particularly TikTok, following Rockstar's extended gameplay reveal on 27 August, with some users insisting they would refuse to let a partner play the game at all.
The relationship mechanic lets players take Jason and Lucia on dates, text them, hold hands and commit crimes together, with the pair growing closer or more distant depending on player engagement. Critics online have compared this unfavourably to games like The Sims, which have long featured similar relationship and intimacy features without similar backlash. Rockstar has stressed the mechanic is optional, and Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told IGN the studio is still working out how to handle physical intimacy between the characters, while praising the emotional connection players can build with them.
