GTA 6’s Relationship System Will Let You Keep Jason and Lucia in the Friend Zone
Developing story first seen 5 hours ago
New previews indicate that Grand Theft Auto 6’s relationship system will allow players to keep protagonists Jason and Lucia as platonic partners rather than pursuing a romance. The feature adds consequences to players’ treatment of the pair, although the story will still keep them working together for most of the game.
Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson said players will need to maintain the relationship by socialising, replying to messages and earning money outside missions through activities including monster-truck racing, pool and treasure diving. Nelson also said players’ conduct, including how they treat their partner and how violent they are, will carry meaning within the new system.
- Jason and Lucia can remain platonic partners.
- Players must actively maintain their relationship.
- The pair remain together through most of the story.
New here? Start with this
Grand Theft Auto VI is the next main game in Rockstar Games’ long-running action series, known for large fictional cities, crime stories and open-world activities. It follows Jason and Lucia, two playable characters who carry out jobs together in a version of Florida called Leonida.
The pair’s relationship is a central part of the game’s story, but players can influence how close they are through choices made between missions. A “friend zone” in this context means keeping their connection platonic rather than romantic.
Rockstar North is the studio developing the game. Features that link character relationships to messages, social activities, money-making and player behaviour aim to make choices outside the main missions affect how the two protagonists interact.
Full account
Rockstar Games has outlined a relationship system for Grand Theft Auto 6 that will track the bond between its two protagonists, Jason and Lucia. According to comments from Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson in preview interviews, players will be able to influence whether the pair remain romantically involved, while the story will still keep them working together for much of the game.
The relationship is said to develop through time spent together beyond the main missions. Activities mentioned in the reports include playing pool, mini-golf, kayaking, shopping, exercise, haircuts and searching underwater for treasure, as well as committing crimes as a pair. Contact between the characters will also matter: arranging to meet or replying to messages can support the relationship, while neglecting messages may have the opposite effect.
Nelson described the mechanic as distinct from a separate system that records the type of criminal the player becomes. He said the game begins with Jason and Lucia considering a relationship, but that following the principal story alone may not be enough to sustain its romantic side. Players who do not wish to pursue that element can apparently let the pair settle into a more platonic partnership instead.
Neither account suggests that players can completely separate Jason and Lucia during most of the narrative. Nelson said their circumstances require co-operation and that they will at least remain partners in crime for much of the story. The system therefore appears designed to give players latitude over the emotional character of their connection, rather than to create wholly separate storylines for each protagonist.
Where outlets differ
Source 1 foregrounds the prospect of keeping Jason and Lucia as friends, and includes speculation about other possible romantic or adult-game content; those points are not confirmed by the reported Rockstar comments.
Source 2 provides the fuller mechanical account, distinguishing the relationship system from the criminality tracker and listing more everyday activities and text-message consequences.
Both reports cite Rob Nelson and agree that the protagonists must remain together for most of the story, but Source 2 more strongly presents the system as optional rather than simply a choice between romance and friendship.
