New previews indicate that Grand Theft Auto 6’s relationship system will allow players to keep protagonists Jason and Lucia as platonic partners rather than pursuing a romance. The feature adds consequences to players’ treatment of the pair, although the story will still keep them working together for most of the game.

Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson said players will need to maintain the relationship by socialising, replying to messages and earning money outside missions through activities including monster-truck racing, pool and treasure diving. Nelson also said players’ conduct, including how they treat their partner and how violent they are, will carry meaning within the new system.

  • Jason and Lucia can remain platonic partners.
  • Players must actively maintain their relationship.
  • The pair remain together through most of the story.

Grand Theft Auto VI is the next main game in Rockstar Games’ long-running action series, known for large fictional cities, crime stories and open-world activities. It follows Jason and Lucia, two playable characters who carry out jobs together in a version of Florida called Leonida.

The pair’s relationship is a central part of the game’s story, but players can influence how close they are through choices made between missions. A “friend zone” in this context means keeping their connection platonic rather than romantic.

Rockstar North is the studio developing the game. Features that link character relationships to messages, social activities, money-making and player behaviour aim to make choices outside the main missions affect how the two protagonists interact.
