GTA VI extended look got 31 million views on Netflix despite six-hour exclusivity window

Engadget · 2 hours ago

An extended gameplay preview of Grand Theft Auto VI became Netflix's top-ranked movie for the week of 24-30 August, despite the streaming platform holding exclusive rights to the footage for only six hours before Rockstar Games released it on YouTube. The nearly 30-minute video, which showcases PlayStation 5 footage of the eagerly awaited title, topped Netflix's film rankings in 58 countries, underlining the intense anticipation surrounding the game ahead of its release.

Netflix recorded 31.1 million views of the preview, counting only completions rather than repeat plays within a household, a stricter metric than YouTube's, where the same video has since amassed more than 17.7 million views. The footage details combat changes, an expanded game world, the ability to switch between playable characters, and various side activities. GTA VI is due for release on 19 November and is expected to take upwards of 80 hours to complete.
