Arkansas Democratic Senate candidate Hallie Shoffner has sparked controversy by declaring on a podcast that farmers prefer undocumented immigrant workers to American citizens, stating she would "trade five Americans for just one" of them. Her comments have become a significant liability in her campaign to challenge Republican Senator Tom Cotton, undermining her efforts to present herself as a moderate Democrat in this deeply conservative state.

Shoffner, who recently closed her family's 150-year-old farm citing high operating costs, previously served as executive director of a nonprofit assisting undocumented workers and has called for defunding the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Senator Cotton, who won re-election in 2020 by 33 points, responded by emphasising that American workers deserve higher wages and better opportunities, whilst his campaign called her comments "deranged and disqualifying." A recent poll showed Shoffner leading Cotton by three points—unusual for Arkansas—but her campaign manager argued the comments were taken out of context, reaffirming her support for border security and immigration reform.
