The HBO Max comedy "Hacks" has secured 24 Emmy nominations for its fifth and final season, setting a new record for the most nominations ever received by a single comedy season. This surpasses the previous benchmark of 23 nominations, held first by "The Bear" and then by "The Studio" for its debut season last year, and marks the show a strong frontrunner heading into the awards ceremony. The achievement is a fitting send-off for the series, which follows a fading Las Vegas comedy legend and the young writer who revives her career.

In terms of final seasons specifically, "Hacks" far exceeded the previous record of 15 nominations set by "Schitt's Creek" in 2020, which itself had broken "30 Rock's" mark of 13 in 2013. The tally is also a personal best for "Hacks", which had earned between 14 and 17 nominations in each prior season and won outstanding comedy series in 2024. It will now compete against titles including "Abbott Elementary", "The Bear", "Only Murders in the Building" and "Shrinking", while last year's winner "The Studio" was ineligible this cycle. Leading the haul is Jean Smart, a four-time winner as Deborah Vance and now a 15-time Emmy nominee, who at 74 has seven Emmys to her name across a lengthy career.

Hacks is an HBO Max comedy that follows Deborah Vance, an ageing Las Vegas stand-up legend, and Ava, the young writer brought in to freshen up her act. Over five seasons the show has explored their prickly mentor-mentee relationship and become one of the most acclaimed comedies on television, winning the outstanding comedy series Emmy in 2024. Its lead, Jean Smart, has drawn particular praise for playing Deborah Vance and has picked up multiple Emmy wins for the role.

The Emmys are the television industry's leading American awards, handed out annually to recognise the best in scripted and unscripted programming. Nominations are announced ahead of the main ceremony, giving an early indication of which shows and performers are seen as frontrunners. The number of nominations a show receives is often read as a marker of industry regard, though it does not guarantee wins on the night.

Hacks is currently airing its fifth and final season, meaning this year's nominations effectively serve as a send-off for the series. It faces competition in the comedy categories from other well-regarded shows such as Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Only Murders in the Building and Shrinking.
