‘Hadestown: The Musical’ Sings With $9.7M Debut, No. 4 Spot, ‘Motor City’ Powers Up As Indies Fuel Top Ten – Specialty Box Office
Bleecker Street's "Hadestown: The Musical" opened to a strong $9.7 million at the specialty box office, marking the second-biggest opening for a live-performance capture since "Hamilton" and landing at No. 4 overall. The debut helped push five independent films into the domestic top ten, underlining continued audience appetite for filmed stage productions and specialty releases even as major studio titles dominate wide release.
The film, screened on 1,949 screens via new event-cinema label Crosswalk and partner LD Entertainment, is being extended beyond its original five-day run due to strong demand, and holds a 99% audience score. Elsewhere in the top ten, Potsy Ponciroli's Detroit-set drama "Motor City" took No. 9 with $1.6 million from 1,600 theatres, while "The Invite" (No. 6), "Young Washington" (No. 8) and "Obsession" (No. 10) rounded out the indie showing; smaller releases included Nicolas Winding Refn's "Her Private Hell" ($530k), Hirokazu Koreeda's "Sheep In The Box" ($33k) and documentaries "A Sad And Beautiful World" and "American Pachuco: The Legend Of Luis Valdez", the latter continuing a strong run after its Sundance Audience Award win.
