Haex – a wilder, weirder open-world adventure

The Guardian · 4 hours ago

Dead Astronauts, a Scandinavian studio founded in 2024, is developing Haex, an online co-operative open-world survival game set in a sub-Arctic landscape. Its defining feature is the "Seed" – a plantable device that terraforms the world in real time, altering vegetation, terrain, story threads and enemies as players progress, meaning each player's world evolves uniquely rather than remaining static like in typical open-world titles.

Players take on the role of research scientists investigating an anomaly, encountering shapeshifting creatures and a mysterious sigil language to decode, alongside shooting and survival mechanics. Creative director Tobias Nyman, who previously worked on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws at Ubisoft Massive, cites influences including Annihilation, Arrival, Jeff VanderMeer's fiction and cosmic black metal, and draws on childhood memories of northern Sweden. The game is being built by a team of just 12 developers.
