A 36-year-old high school staff member has been arrested in Japan after allegedly killing around 50 hamsters in two separate attacks carried out with two young women at "love hotels" in Miyako, Iwate. The case has drawn widespread shock in Japan, coming amid a broader rise in recorded animal cruelty offences nationally, and highlights growing concern over animal welfare enforcement in the country.

Police say the man was first detained in July over the killing of roughly 20 hamsters in February, allegedly with a 19-year-old woman, before his latest arrest on Monday over a further 30 killed in late March with a 20-year-old woman. Investigators found videos of the killings and incriminating messages on his phone, including one asking "where are we going to kill the hamsters and have fun?" Both women have also been arrested for suspected animal welfare violations, and police say they are investigating whether further offences occurred. Japan recorded a record 181 suspected animal welfare violations in 2023, more than five times the number in 2010.
