Harbinger raises $240M after expanding into defense
Electric truck maker Harbinger has raised $240 million in a Series D round as it broadens its business into battery storage and defence applications. The funding signals continued investor support for the Los Angeles-based startup as it moves beyond its original focus on electric truck chassis.
The round was co-led by Tiger Global, Capricorn’s technology impact fund and defence-focused Ridgeline, with FedEx and several existing investors also participating. Harbinger has raised more than $650 million in total; FedEx has ordered 2,000 trucks worth over $300 million, and its senior vice-president Paul Melander has joined the startup’s board. Founded in 2022 by former Canoo and QuantumScape employees, Harbinger has also acquired autonomy startup Phantom AI and is developing hybrid emergency vehicles and a driverless hybrid-electric military platform.
In short
- Harbinger raised $240 million in a Series D.
- FedEx ordered 2,000 trucks worth more than $300 million.
- The startup is expanding into defence and battery storage.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The funding and FedEx order suggest Harbinger has attracted substantial commercial backing, while expansion into storage, emergency vehicles and defence could broaden its market and support investment in its vehicle technology. Supporters may argue that supplying military and emergency platforms is a legitimate way to meet operational needs and that private investment can help the company scale.
The case against
Critics may question whether a young company expanding across several demanding markets can execute reliably, especially as it takes on acquisitions and complex vehicle programmes. They may also object to applying Harbinger’s technology to military platforms, or argue that the company’s growth prospects and public value should be judged by delivery and performance rather than fundraising and announced orders.
