Rare first edition of Harper Lee novel found in charity shop
A rare first US edition of Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird has been discovered among donated books at an Oxfam shop in west London. The British Library has acquired the copy for its national collection, highlighting how valuable literary treasures can be found in second-hand donations.
The book was identified by shop manager Olivia Haysman-Walker in a box of American books at Oxfam’s Portobello Road shop. Although its dust jacket was worn, the pages were in excellent condition; Lee’s 1960 novel has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, been translated into 40 languages and won the Pulitzer Prize.
