Woman fatally shot by stalker outside Sacramento restaurant, suspect dies

Daily Mail · 2 hours ago

Police in Sacramento, California, have released footage showing 38-year-old Shalini Thakur being chased down and shot dead by an obsessive stalker outside a Panera Bread restaurant on 8 September. The attacker, 22-year-old Rohit Rohit, an Indian national who had entered the US illegally in 2023, then fled by car before shooting himself dead as deputies closed in, ending any prospect of prosecution or answers for the victim's family.

According to Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, Rohit accosted Thakur near a shopping mall, chased her as she tried to flee, shot her multiple times, and then shot her again in the head at close range as she lay on the pavement. The pair had met through his DoorDash deliveries to her workplace, and his harassment reportedly began as early as January, including planting a tracking device on her car, deflating her tyres, breaking into her home while she slept, and breaching a restraining order she had obtained in July. Thakur's mother, who said her daughter was her only child, told local media that police had failed to protect her despite repeated restraining order applications, and described speaking to her by phone shortly before the killing.
