Harry Styles Debuts Unreleased Song He Wrote in Memory of Liam Payne, ‘What Is Enough,’ on Second Anniversary of Ex-Bandmate’s Death

Variety ·

Harry Styles marked the second anniversary of Liam Payne’s death by performing “What Is Enough”, an unreleased acoustic song he wrote for his former One Direction bandmate. The premiere during his New York residency’s encore turned a celebratory show into a public tribute, as Styles spoke about friendship, loss and looking after one another.

Styles said he wrote the song about two years ago and had kept it private until the performance at Madison Square Garden. Its lyrics refer to burying friends and include the image of writing a letter and watching it burn; fans had difficulty hearing some words in the arena. Payne died on 16 October 2024, while his funeral took place on 20 November that year; Styles then returned to the show with “Sign of the Times” and “Aperture”.
