Harry Styles opened his 30-show Madison Square Garden residency in New York with a substantially revamped setlist, departing from the largely unchanged programme used throughout his recent “Together, Together” tour. He also paid tribute to Dolly Parton following the announcement of her death, thanking her as an influence before playing part of her recording of “I Will Always Love You”; the moment underscored the significance of the opening night at a venue closely linked to his career.

Styles began with “Dance No More” rather than his usual opener and brought back “Carolina”, which he had not performed live since his first solo tour. He reshuffled the running order, altered arrangements of older songs and gave “The Waiting Game”, from his latest album, its first public performance; he also recalled kissing the Madison Square Garden floor before his One Direction debut there at age 18 in 2012.
