HBO Max is putting on vertical shorts
Warner Bros. Discovery is adding a TikTok-style vertical video feed to HBO Max, called "HBO Max Shorts," to help users discover shows and films. The move brings HBO Max in line with rivals such as Netflix, Disney Plus and Peacock, which already use similar short-form, swipeable feeds to surface content, reflecting a broader industry shift towards this discovery format.
The feed will sit behind an icon on the bottom navigation bar and will show trailers, clips and bonus content curated to each user's viewing history, letting them jump straight into a title or save it for later. Clips are chosen using an in-house AI tool that scans scene-level metadata across the library before HBO Max editors pick the final selections, which are then reformatted for vertical viewing. It launches first with select iOS users in the US, with plans to expand to more devices, markets and sports content; WBD is separately testing a conversational, natural-language search feature for Android users in the US.
