HBO has officially confirmed development of a Baldur's Gate television adaptation, with Craig Mazin—showrunner of The Last of Us—attached to create, write, and oversee the project. The series will draw from the Dungeons & Dragons universe and the critically acclaimed 2023 video game, with Mazin citing hundreds of hours invested in the source material as motivation for the creative challenge.

The project's announcement effectively marks the beginning of the end for The Last of Us, as previous statements from HBO Max Chairman Casey Bloys suggested Season 3 would be the series' final instalment. Season 3 is currently in post-production with returning cast including Bella Ramsey and Gabriel Luna, alongside new additions from several notable actors. Though executives have technically left room for future changes, the shift in showrunner focus to Baldur's Gate signals a clear transition away from the post-apocalyptic drama.
