Deadline ·

HBO has announced casting for several magical figures in its Harry Potter series, with David Threlfall voicing the Sorting Hat. The reveal adds familiar Hogwarts characters to the growing cast as the programme’s planned Christmas launch approaches.

Leo Bill will play Nearly Headless Nick, Andrew Brooke the Bloody Baron, Daniel Fearn the Fat Friar, and Laura Smyth the Fat Lady, who admits Gryffindors to their common room when given the password. The series is based on J.K. Rowling’s books, written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes; some casting for a second season has also begun.

In short

  • David Threlfall will voice Hogwarts’ Sorting Hat.
  • Four actors have been cast as Hogwarts ghosts and the Fat Lady.
  • HBO’s series is building towards a planned Christmas launch.

Explained simply

The Harry Potter story is set largely at Hogwarts, a school for young witches and wizards. Its pupils are divided into four houses, including Gryffindor, and the school is also home to ghosts who reflect its long history.

The Sorting Hat assigns new pupils to a house, while the Fat Lady guards the entrance to Gryffindor’s common room and lets pupils in when they give the correct password. Nearly Headless Nick, the Bloody Baron and the Fat Friar are other Hogwarts ghosts. These figures help establish the school’s routines and atmosphere, and are familiar from J.K. Rowling’s books.
