‘He must resign’: Fans’ petition calls for Infantino to quit as Fifa president

The Guardian · 4 hours ago

Fans' organisations from around the world have launched a petition demanding the resignation of Fifa president Gianni Infantino, alongside sweeping reform of football's global governing body. The move follows Infantino's abandoned plan to bring in private investment to run Fifa tournaments, including the men's and women's World Cups, which prompted three continental confederations to accuse him of "deception" and led Uefa to say it had "lost confidence" in his leadership.

The petition, hosted on change.org, has already attracted support from fan groups across all six Fifa confederations, who accuse Infantino of negotiating the investment plan in secret and "behind closed doors". While Infantino retains backing in Africa and South America, the statement argues he has "lost the right to lead" and calls for reforms such as giving supporters a formal role in decisions about the game's future. Ronan Evain of Football Supporters Europe said Fifa's governance needed to "start from scratch", suggesting ideas such as a rotating presidency should be explored. Fifa has been approached for comment.
