Ireland experienced prolonged hot, dry weather in mid-August, placing pressure on farms through reduced grass growth, water-supply concerns and the need to consider supplementary feed for livestock. A high-temperature warning covered 13 counties, with daytime temperatures expected to exceed 27°C and warm nights also forecast. Agricultural advisers said dry conditions had made harvesting easier in some areas, but crop yields were variable and the wider effects on grass-based livestock systems remained a concern.

Separately, Irish athlete Kate O’Connor was second in the women’s heptathlon after the opening two events at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on 14 August. She subsequently improved her position across the seven-event competition, taking the overall title on 15 August with 6,751 points, an Irish national record. Her result contributed to Ireland’s third medal of the championships, following gold for Mark English and silver for Rhasidat Adeleke.

  • Dry weather curtailed grass growth and created water-supply and livestock-feeding pressures for farms.
  • Kate O’Connor was second early in the European heptathlon before winning the overall title.
