Hegseth demands $350B for military, fires back at Dem impeachment push
Pete Hegseth has asked Congress to approve at least $350 billion in additional defence funding, saying it would strengthen the military and defence industry. In a video posted on X, he also defended his changes at the Pentagon and dismissed an effort to impeach him as politically motivated.
The impeachment articles, introduced by Republican Thomas Massie in September, accuse Hegseth of violating Congress’s war powers during the Iran conflict and misusing his authority in other operations. The House has not voted on them, and Massie plans to renew the effort when Congress returns next week; Donald Trump said he intends to keep Hegseth in his Cabinet.
In short
- Hegseth is seeking at least $350 billion in defence funding.
- He rejected impeachment efforts as political theatre.
- The House has not voted on Massie’s articles.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Supporters could argue that additional defence funding would strengthen military readiness, replenish capabilities and support the industrial base, particularly amid conflict and security risks. They may also say Hegseth should be allowed to reorganise the Pentagon and that impeachment should rest on clear evidence of serious misconduct, not political disagreement.
The case against
Critics could argue that an additional $350 billion requires a compelling account of costs, priorities and oversight, and that military expansion should not be assumed to be the best response to security risks. They may also view the war-powers allegations as a serious constitutional concern, warranting congressional scrutiny regardless of Hegseth’s political standing.
