‘Helldivers 3’ Is Officially Not Happening for 1 Major Reason
Arrowhead Game Studios is not currently making Helldivers 3, because its chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt says the sequel’s biggest competitor would be Helldivers 2 itself. The studio is prioritising continued work on the successful cooperative shooter, whose established player community and ongoing appeal make a new instalment a difficult proposition.
Helldivers 2 sold 12 million copies in its first 12 weeks on PlayStation 5 and PC, surpassing the launch record set by God of War Ragnarök. Arrowhead says 95% of its staff are still focused on Helldivers 2, while a small team is prototyping another project. The game expanded to Xbox Series X|S on 26 August 2025, with cross-play linking players across Xbox, PlayStation 5 and PC.
In short
- Helldivers 3 is not an Arrowhead priority.
- The studio says Helldivers 2 would compete with its successor.
- 95% of staff are still working on Helldivers 2.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Continuing to invest in Helldivers 2 lets Arrowhead build on a large, active community and improve a game that players already enjoy, while avoiding the risk that a sequel would divide its audience or struggle to offer enough that is genuinely new. With most of the studio focused on the existing game, this approach may also make better use of its staff and sustain the title’s appeal across platforms.
The case against
A sequel could give Arrowhead room to make substantial changes to the formula, technology or design that may be difficult to deliver within an established live game. Relying on Helldivers 2 for the foreseeable future also carries the risk that its appeal fades, while delaying a new instalment could make it harder to renew interest or respond to what players want next.
Explained simply
Helldivers 2 is a cooperative shooter made by Swedish studio Arrowhead Game Studios, in which players team up to fight alien threats. It launched on PlayStation 5 and PC in 2024 and sold 12 million copies in its first 12 weeks; it later expanded to Xbox Series X|S, with players able to join across platforms.
The game’s continuing popularity gives Arrowhead a large player community and an established game to keep developing. A sequel would need to offer enough to draw players away from Helldivers 2, while competing with a game the studio itself maintains.
