Sony Music Entertainment has filed a new lawsuit against AI music generator Udio, accusing it of infringing copyright on more than 30,000 songs, including tracks by Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Johnny Cash and Harry Styles. The filing, lodged in a New York court, follows Sony's original 2024 lawsuit against Udio and rival AI firm Suno, brought jointly with Universal Music Group and Warner Records, and reflects Sony's ongoing effort to hold AI companies accountable for allegedly training models on copyrighted recordings without permission.

Sony says the newly listed songs were identified through an "audio fingerprinting" technique after it gained access to Udio's training data during discovery, and argues they represent "only a small portion" of the works infringed. A judge had previously rejected Sony's attempt to add these 30,000-plus songs to the original case, which remains limited to 333 works, prompting Sony to pursue them via a fresh lawsuit it says it may expand further. Unlike Sony, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group have since settled with Udio and are now partnering with it, while Sony is seeking to block further infringement and is claiming damages of up to $150,000 per work.
