Beytullah Gunduz, a 40-year-old high-ranking member of the Hackney Turks organised crime group, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years for conspiring to murder Onur Guzel outside a Turkish restaurant in Dalston, east London. Gunduz orchestrated the shooting as part of a cycle of gang violence and extortion, having demanded £100,000 from Guzel in the weeks preceding the attack. The case represents another chapter in a long-running territorial conflict between the Hackney Turks and rival gang the Tottenham Turks, with innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.

On 20 June, Guzel was shot in the torso whilst on his break from work; CCTV footage recorded him screaming as he lay on the pavement. The actual gunman, Dogan Over, fired from a Kia Niro before fleeing to Istanbul on 25 June and has not returned. Guzel suffered permanent and irreversible injuries and now requires a stoma bag pending surgery. Just a year earlier, in May 2024, Gunduz himself had been targeted in a shooting ordered by the Tottenham Turks at the Evin restaurant, an attack that tragically left a nine-year-old girl with a bullet lodged in her brain. Gunduz refused to attend his sentencing, his barrister stating he feared being attacked in court.
