High School Musical brings energetic basketball spectacle to London stage

The Guardian ·

A new London stage production of *High School Musical* revisits Disney’s squeaky-clean story of Troy and Gabriella, whose shared love of singing challenges their school’s social divisions. The show is bright, energetic and likely to please devoted fans, though its simple character types and the young leads’ still-developing chemistry limit its emotional impact.

The production uses a basketball-themed set, vivid lighting, strong sound and video screens to create a lively courtside spectacle, with nimble choreography linking the basketball game, science competition and auditions. KayCee Stroh, who appeared in the original films, plays drama teacher Ms Darbus, while McFly’s Harry Judd is Coach Bolton; the show runs at Troubadour Wembley Park until 3 January.

  • Fans are likely to enjoy the spectacle despite familiar story limits.
