High school sweethearts and their two sons are killed in an instant when ‘tired’ pickup driver crashed into them, police say

Daily Mail · 2 hours ago

Two high school sweethearts and their two young sons were killed in Arizona after a pickup truck driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and collided head-on with their car. Giovanni Huerta and Kiah Begaye, both 26, along with their sons Dakota, four, and Malakai, two, died instantly in the crash, which has devastated their families and raised concerns about drug-impaired and fatigued driving.

The collision occurred around 12.30pm on Monday on State Route 260 near Heber-Overgaard, as the family was returning home from a Labor Day weekend trip to New Mexico. The driver, 21-year-old Jesse David Lovato, was travelling from Phoenix and allegedly told police he had fallen asleep before waking to find his truck rolling over; officers reportedly found marijuana and vape pens near his vehicle, and he admitted to smoking cannabis the previous night. Lovato has been booked on four counts of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault, while a GoFundMe for the family's funeral costs has raised more than $85,000.
